It is amazing to me, as I work with businesses that want to improve marketing, how much they can do by simply starting with the basics. One of the first things I ask a business to do is to begin tracking where their customers are coming from. This means asking, “so how did you hear about/find us?” You can truely learn more about your marketing efforts by doing this than almost anything else… and keep track of this. Most people only remember the last few responses, and are surprised when they document the answers over time.
As basic as it sounds, start tracking where your business is coming from and you can determine if your efforts, and more importantly, marketing dollars are working for you. Clients are often surprised at how much money they make (save) by discontinuing advertising or marketing that doesn’t work.
